The Digital Mission of Church Online: Halloween Edition

Many of the churches I work with do something during the Halloween season to actively engage within the community. Fall Festival, Trunk or Treat, Block Party… the philosophy here is to get people on your church campus. Couple big wins here, especially for family ministries:

  1. this reinforces that your church cares about families, 2) this gets people on your campus’ physical property. 3) this creates an opportunity to invite people to your church, serving as an excellent front-door.

If you’re like most churches, chances are your church is putting a lot of energy and effort into creating ministry opportunities for your physical locations. But what about your Church Online? What ministry opportunities exist there?

Remember there’s a

difference between using online as a digital communications tool and a digital missions vehicle

. If we communicate to our Church Online about what we’re doing at the physical campuses, then we’re communicating digitally about our events. For a Church Online audience miles away from your physical location, telling them about the physical campuses isn’t a win.

This is where the idea of digital mission comes into play. While church at physical locations often operates with a ”

come and see”

, digital missions operates more as a ”

go and do

.” Use opportunities like Halloween, Christmas, Easter, etc. to not just invite people to participate in a “special broadcast”, but empower your online audience to reach the community they live, whether a couple blocks or a couple states away from the physical campus. What you’ll soon discover is that your church’s circle of influence will quickly extend beyond your city.

**

Remember, Church Online isn’t a virtual building. It’s a virtual distribution network empowering the spread of the gospel.
